Intention - a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future.
When you set an intention, you are activating your receptivity, manifesting and putting out that which you intend to attract and call into your life, and that is the power behind it. I have been setting intentions since my days at Columbia University. It was a requirement that we took a course that took place daily. This course was a mindfulness course. We had to be there every morning bright and early at 7 am! Yes, 7 am! Girllllsssss….now I’ll wake up at at 5 am for a number of things, yet at that point in my life, a mindfulness class wasn’t one of them. I pretty much felt like this…
Yetttt….by day 4, I was hooked. Our instructor had us write our intentions of the day each and every morning. First, we meditated to clear our minds, then we wrote our intentions for the day. She encouraged us to check back in with our intentions throughout our day and reflect on them at the end of each day. It is a practice that I have never forgotten or let go of.
There are many accessible ways to change our thoughts and intentions on the subconscious level. I suggest that some of the preliminary things be worked on first before you begin setting intentions. These things include releasing negative energy through ridding yourself of the things that no longer serve you or your life, moving towards an abundant place of self-acceptance and self-love, and pushing your thoughts to a place of positivity and gratitude at all times, even when things seem rough and tough with our afro puffs. (I hope ya’ll got that old school Rage rap lyric reference. Hehehehe!!)
MBG suggests that intention is much more powerful when it comes from a place of contentment than if it arises from a sense of lack or need. Stay centered and refuse to be influenced by other people’s doubts or criticisms. Your higher self knows that everything is all right and will be all right, even without knowing the timing or the details of what will happen. As I furthered my research around intentions and intention setting since my Columbia days, I am guided in my process through the platform Mind, Body and Green. They are a great resource for all things health and wellness!! A few ideas in which they suggest are the ones that guide me and are mentioned here.
Here a few ways in which we can set intentions in our lives:
We are often aroused and surrounded by the noise and chaos of our lives. Beyond this noisy internal dialogue is a state of clarity and awareness. Mind, body and green refers to this as “the gap.” The best way to guide ourselves to this place is through meditation. Through this, we go beyond the ego-mind, where we can reach silence, stillness and pure consciousness. It is said, by MBG, that this is the ideal state in which to plant your seeds of intention.
Write Your Intentions
The best time to plant your intentions is during the period after meditating in which your mind is clear. This is the time when your awareness remains centered in the quiet field of all possibilities. I meditate each morning and then write my intentions. Write down your intentions in a notebook or any place you can get them in a text form in which you can later refer back to. This can be a book or place specifically for your intentions, an affirmation book or a book that you use daily. It sort of serves like your diary. Let’s call it an intention diary.
Detach From the Outcome
I have directly applied this to my life from Mind, Body and Green. I find it to be the most important part of setting intentions.
Relinquish your rigid attachment to a specific result and live in the wisdom of uncertainty. Attachment is based on fear and insecurity, while detachment is based on the unquestioning belief in the power of your true self. Intend for everything to work out as it should, then let go and allow opportunities and openings to come your way.
Let it Go, Let it Flow
You put them out there, now let your intentions be free and go into the universe. Allow your higher power and the universe to take their course while you are putting out the energy. Focus your energy on walking in your intentions step by step. Do not stress about them. Organically and naturally intend your intentions. They are your NOW.
As we set our daily intentions, setting them in the most authentic and purposeful way is where we should be pushing towards. In this way, you become the director of your life because the universe will always support your thoughts. Be sure to be mindful and reflective of what intentions you are setting!
When you make your intentions powerful, you have a powerful life!
According to MBG Mindfulness, in order to treat the root of our subconscious minds, there are many engagements such as NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), past live regression or hypnosis, which have proven effective. Although, I have heard of these, I have never done them before. I am highly interested in doing the past life regression and will do more research around it. I shall keep you all updated!!
An intention is an expression of your inner self and what your internal being, which is essentially you, desires. Be sure to take quiet moments, open your ears wide, and listen to what your internality is expressing to you so that you may guide your external toward intention. Set your purposeful intentions, all of course while being,
Unapologetically Me. Unapologetically You. Unapologetically Us.
